What is a Commercial Vehicle?

When a business needs things done, in many cases average passenger vehicles won’t do. Because their operations require enormous amounts of driving, heavy loads carried daily, or simply a custom vehicle to suit a particular job, businesses commonly rely on commercial vehicles. What is a commercial vehicle? Put simply, a commercial vehicle is generally a truck or van built and solid to conduct business, and as such is generally much heavier duty than a normal car or SUV. Pickup trucks are often used in this role through their heavy duty guise, but vans often have specialized variants built from the factory for certain professions and variants built partially-finished for easy customization by an aftermarket company for a business use.

What is Considered a Commercial Vehicle?

There are legal requirements for commercial vehicles, both in terms of registration and operation. Depending on your location, and because of their heavier weight and more challenging driving dynamics, you may need a commercial vehicle driver’s license, or CDL, to operate a commercial vehicle legally.

So, legally, what is considered a commercial vehicle? According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), if a vehicle meets one of these conditions, it can be classified as a commercial vehicle:

  • Having a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Designed to transport more than 15 passengers including the driver for no compensation
  • Designed to transport more than 8 passengers for compensation
  • Designed to transport hazardous materials in quantities requiring the vehicle to be placarded
