Like with all technology, sometimes things go awry, but Chevy has made their key fob programming simple. So how do you open a Chevy key fob to program it? Follow these steps to taking advantage of this exciting feature on your Malibu or Silverado:

  1. Manually unlock your car door with your Chevy key.
  2. Be sure that all of the side doors are fully shut, then put the key in the ignition, but don’t start the car.
  3. Press and hold the unlock button on the driver’s side door, then turn your key to the “On” position. The interior lights and radio will come on, but the engine should not be ignited.
  4. Turn the key back to the “Off” position, then turn it to “On” and right back to “Off” once again in quick succession. (On – Off – On – Off) 
  5. Release the unlock button.
  6. After releasing the unlock button, you should hear the door locks engage and disengage, telling you that the programming sequence can start.
  7. On your Chevy key fob, press and hold the “Unlock” and “Lock” buttons simultaneously until you hear the door locks engage and disengage again, indicating that you have successfully programmed your key fob. 
  8. Re-insert the newly programmed key into the ignition in the “On” position to end the programming sequence.
